How Waiting Can Make You Stronger

Elizabeth | AUG 3, 2025

Are you waiting for something right now? Maybe it's an update or answer from someone, a result from work you've put in, or something exciting coming up.

For the last few weeks, I've been in a metaphorical waiting room, compulsively checking my email for responses to an apartment application. Those responses are coming much more slowly than I hoped or expected they would. And it's been really difficult to sit and wait for what's not in my control.

If this hits in any way right now, let me offer what I'm telling myself (with the help of my loved ones' advice):

Being present in the difficulty of waiting makes you stronger.

Rather than fighting or resisting this uncomfortable state, what would happen if you surrendered to it even just a little bit, accepting what's not in your control and trusting that this won't last forever?

This shows up in my yoga practice, especially in pigeon pose -- a hip opener that reveals the tightness in my outer hips and shoulders, and feels uncomfortable to stay in.

But practicing being present in it, with the help of my breath, actually softens that discomfort and allows me to better access pigeon's benefits.

And, as time keeps moving, the waiting does come to an end. What can you experience and learn from it in the meantime?

Whatever you're waiting for, your yoga practice can help you move through it.
